4-Axis rotary machining is an important machining techniques often used in the Automotive and Oil and Gas industries. Applications include shaft work, such as camshafts and crankshaft components, oil field tooling, cutting tools and blade machining.
Often machining is limited to a single rotary axis (4-Axis machining), however there are occasions when both rotary axes may be required (5-Axis rotary machining).

Machining Strategies
A full range of roughing and finishing strategies are provided
- SWARF machining allows the side of the tool to be tilted over to machine the side wall at the correct angle
- Flowline cutting produces a toolpath that follows the natural shape of the component; particularly useful with blade type components
- Multi-surface finish machining keeps the tool normal to the surface (or with specified lead and lag) to provide full control and smooth surface finish
- Multi-pass roughing techniques using multiple cut increments the Z or XY planes with the option to trim to boundary
Flexibility and Control
Link and approach moves are fully gouge protected and different strategies may be used depending on the distance of the link move. The feedrate may also be varied on the link moves to allow for a smooth approach onto the part
Collision Avoidance
Collision Avoidance is supported for both the tool and holder and a range of alternatives offered to avoid collision. These include Retract to Safe, Move along Vector, Tilt to Avoid Collision and Trim Toolpath (pictures).
ModuleWorks 4-Axis rotary machining can be used on any configuration with a rotary table, typically vertical machining centres and Mill/Turn machining centres. The ModuleWorks post processor kernel is included which can be configured the NC code for the target machine
